Get control of your periodic charges

If you are the registered owner or user of a vehicle with a Danish number plate, you are legally required to pay a periodic tax. The type of tax you have to pay is determined by the date the vehicle was first registered.

The different types of periodic charges

There are three types of periodic taxes, which are determined by when your vehicle is registered for the first time – regardless of whether the first registration took place in Denmark or abroad. You only pay one of the three periodic charges, and depending on which vehicle you have, you either pay the charge quarterly, half-yearly or annually. Find out more about the different periodic charges below.

Weight tax

Weight tax is calculated based on the weight of the vehicle. The heavier the vehicle, the higher the weight tax. Passenger cars and motorcycles pay based on the vehicle’s own weight, while vans and trucks pay based on the vehicle’s permitted total weight.

Passenger cars

If your car was registered for the first time before 1 July 1997, you pay weight tax.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles always pay weight tax.

Vans

For vans, you pay weight tax if your vehicle is registered for the first time before 18 March 2009.

Green property tax

Green owner tax is calculated based on how far the vehicle drives per liters of fuel. The longer it runs, the lower the green property tax.

Passenger cars

If your car (buses excepted) was registered for the first time between 1 July 1997 and 30 June 2021, you pay green owner tax.

Varebiler

For vans, you pay green ownership tax if your vehicle is registered for the first time in the period between 18 March 2009 and 30 June 2021.

CO2 owner tax

On 1 July 2021, a new periodic tax was introduced, namely the CO2 owner tax. The CO2 owner tax is calculated based on how many grams of CO2 the vehicle emits per kilometer. The less CO2 emitted per kilometres, the lower the tax.

Cars and vans

If you have a car or van (buses excepted) that was registered for the first time on 1 July 2021 or later, you pay CO2 owner tax.

Other charges

In addition to paying either weight tax, green owner tax or CO2 owner tax, there may be additional taxes, depending on which vehicle you have. This can be, for example, equalization tax, particle emission tax, road use tax and private use tax.
