When do I have to pay weight tax?
Weight-based tax is a fee that the owner must pay based on the vehicle’s weight and when the vehicle was first registered.
If your car was registered for the first time before 1 July 1997 and your van for the first time before 18 March 2009, you must pay weight tax. If your vehicle is registered later, you must either pay green owner tax or CO2 owner tax. Note, you always pay weight tax on motorcycles.
The weight tax is calculated based on the vehicle’s weight. The heavier the vehicle, the higher the weight tax. Passenger cars and motorcycles pay based on the vehicle’s curb weight, while vans and trucks pay based on the vehicle’s permitted total weight.
Overview of Periodic Charges
- If your car was first registered before July 1, 1997, you must pay a weight-based tax.
- If your car was first registered between July 1, 1997, and June 30, 2021, you must pay a green ownership tax.
- If your car was first registered after July 1, 2021, you must pay a CO2 ownership tax.
How to Calculate the Weight-Based Tax on Your Vehicle
The weight-based tax is a mandatory fee that you can pay either continuously or periodically. This tax affects the cost of owning a car, and the amount is calculated based on the weight of the vehicle.
In the section for tax rates, you can easily research and compare what cars in different weight classes will cost you in tax. It’s especially a good idea to investigate before purchasing a used car so that you’re aware of the vehicle’s total expenses.
The tax rates are adjusted annually. Therefore, the amount you need to pay in tax for your car may vary from year to year.
In the coming years, the rates for several car taxes, including the weight-based tax, will increase annually from 2022 to 2026 as part of a political agreement on the green transition of road transport.
- In 2022, the tax will increase by 4%.
- From 2023 to 2025, the tax will increase by 6.5%.
- In 2026, the tax will increase by 10%.
Following this, the rate for the equalization tax was increased to 20.7% on February 15, 2021.

Here you will also find the tax rate for the equalization supplement imposed on diesel cars. The equalization supplement increases along with the vehicle’s weight, just like with the weight-based tax itself. Additionally, note that an annual supplement of 1,000 DKK will be imposed on your diesel car if you have not had a particulate filter installed.
If you have a motorcycle that runs on diesel, you will also have to pay the equalization tax.
