Understand how SKAT finds and calculates CO2 emissions on a car

Did you know that you can save money on car tax by having the paperwork in order? The more information you have on the car you want to buy, the cheaper the tax will actually be for you.

How SKAT finds and calculates the right CO2 figure

When SKAT needs to find the CO2 emissions of a car, they make the calculation based on the following order:

  1. Total calculated CO2 emissions
  2. CO2 emissions converted to WLTP target norm
  3. Fuel consumption measured in litres per 100 km. is converted to CO2 emissions, measured in WLTP
  4. Total calculated fuel consumption in km/l converted to litres per 100 km. converted to CO2 emissions, measured in WLTP
  5. Total weight and unladen weight (only used on cars without the above data)

If SKAT does not have information on the car’s CO2 emissions, or if there is incorrect information in DMR (Motor Registered), SKAT does not calculate the tax based on the CO2 emissions, but instead on the fuel consumption, as described above. It can have a big impact on the price of the tax and thus add up to a lot of money if you register many cars a year.

You can always find the numbers and information in the car’s CoC document. Therefore, always remember to have the paperwork in order if you want to save money on the tax.

In addition, it is important that the numbers on the car’s CoC document must be in the DMR before the vehicle is determined and registered.

What is a CoC document?

CoC stands for Certificate of Conformity. It is a certificate that the factory issues when a car is produced. In the CoC document, the car’s most important data and information are documented. Information that is required by law when you need to have a car approved for inspection in Denmark. This can be information such as the type approval number, weight figure, fuel consumption and range of the battery in the case of an electric or plug-in hybrid car. For electric and plug-in hybrid cars, it is especially important that you have a CoC document to be able to get the car approved for customs inspection in Denmark.
